Be fair to your fair fish

Goldfish in aquarium

The goldfish is one of the most misunderstood animals on the planet. Many people get them at carnivals and fairs, by tossing a golf ball into the top of the tiny bowls that contain them. You may have even happened upon your own goldfish in such a way.

However, most people don’t know that a goldfish can live as long as 40 years when properly cared for. Also, a one-inch goldfish won at the fair can turn into a 14-inch goldfish that requires a large tank to thrive and be happy.

It’s recommended that you have at least 20 gallons of water for each goldfish (so if you have two, you’d need a 40-gallon tank, and so on). Goldfish are social animals, so they should be kept with at least one or two other goldfish companions. Never mix tropical fish with goldfish, as their temperature ranges are completely different. Goldfish do best in cooler temperatures, under 75 degrees Fahrenheit, and tropical fish do best above that range.

Find a respected local aquarium shop where they will help you select a tank, substrate, heater, and filtration for your new friend. The expense of setting up a healthy environment for your goldfish is well worth the years of beauty and entertainment they will bring to your home.
